Physical Therapy

Evaluating Best Treatments For Delays In Motor Skills

Physical Therapy may be an option for children with developmental difficulties, ASD, traumatic brain injury, and other concerns impacting development. The area of concern/ delay may be underdeveloped musculature and neuroanatomy, delayed motor control, weak muscle tone and impaired breathing control. These areas of physical delay limit functional development.

Both young and older children, teens and adults can benefit from a carefully designed exercise program provided by a physical therapist.

As with other therapies, goals for physical therapy are determined on an individual basis with input from parents, physicians and other members of the treatment team.

A physical therapist can help a child with developmental difficulties learn a variety of age-appropriate motor skills, from throwing, catching and kicking a ball to jumping, hopping, riding a bike and other less playful physical therapies such as:

  • Treating impairments in systems that affect motor function, such as problems with breath control and coordination
  • Improvement of posture
  • Treatment of musculoskeletal system, such as chest wall deformities, foot and ankle misalignments
  • Developing fitness programs for older children with autism, such as yoga classes for autistic children

AC&A provides a warm and professional environment. You will need a tablet, smartphone, or computer with a built-in camera and microphone and access to reliable internet. It is recommended you test your device prior to confirming your audio and video work well. Consultations are held via ZOOM meetings and you can check your device and web connection in this link: http://zoom.us/test.

Prior to your Video Consultation, your assigned therapist or screener will review your Patient Intake Form and know your main concerns. During the video consultation, the therapist or screener will answer your questions and will present you with the most suitable therapeutic and treatment options for your needs.

Whenever the patient does not have sufficient autonomy or mastery of technology to participate in an online meeting, the presence of a caregiver or family member during the consultation will be necessary.

Relatives and other health professionals who wish to participate in the consultation remotely may do so if they have previously been registered in the Patient Intake Form.
